The Process of writing an academic paper turns out to be a bit different than posting here or even completing a textbook. In the end, it was a rewarding effort and resulted in driving my research forward in useful ways.

I was invited to contribute to a special issue of the journal information on game design. I proposed a paper titled Application of Pattern Language for Game Design in Pedagogy and Design Practice and it was accepted with minor revisions. It took about 3 months of concerted work to put the paper together and working with the editors of the special edition was a joy, though I can’t recommend the publication as a whole due to poor communication with the journal editors and management.

If you have been following the development of design pattern language’s use for learning and teaching game design then this article will introduce two new ideas. First is the idea of applying a formal ontology language (OWL2) to design patterns to facilitate the use of logical reasoning software to help select patterns that apply to a particular design problem. The second is the analysis of the pattern derivation process in terms of formal pedagogy. Spoilers, it holds up rather well!

In any case, this is a link to the article. t’s open access so anyone can download and read it!
